DNA Paternity Testing

We assume that your case is one of mutual consent, with living, willing persons to test. The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms stipulates that DNA testing represents an invasive procedure, and therefore participation in such a test must be voluntary. If it's not possible to obtain consent (i.e. if the person is deceased), then samples of bodily tissues and/or fluids may be obtained from clinics and hospitals where the person was a patient.

If there's a desire to conclusively prove the paternity in a given case, here's how to do it in Québec:

> Cost

The cost of an R.F.L.P. DNA (blood) test is $860.00 (Can.) + Txs for a standard case to test a mother, child and alleged father. The cost to test each additional person is $285.00 +Txs. (double-check with lab for current rates). A statistically less reliable test is available for less money, and certain kinds of cases. Please note that if the patients are referred by a family doctor, the testing is tax-exempt. Also, Legal Aid may pay for all, or some of the costs, in certain cases.Hospitals charge their own administration fees for copies of hospital records, and forwarding of tissue samples. Contact your hospital to learn their fees. For cases requiring lawyers, add legal fees.

> How

Call, fax or write the company for information and an application. Be aware, however, that the entire process can be lengthy, and is a serious legal matter. It can take up to 6 months to obtain a birth file or samples from the hospitals, for example, and unless handled with respect for the law, your actions could land you in court.

*Please note that these services are not available to minors, unless initiated and approved by their legal parent, guardian or tutor. Age of testee, however, will not affect test results.
